THE 2012 SEASON IS FINALLY HERE!!
Unusally great weather and BST arrives together for
the new golf season - woop!!
Fine weather is due to stay around for our first meeting,
teeing off 1.15pm this coming Wednesday at Lyme
Regis Golf Club.
Can you all note that the society does not carry any
golf insurance of any kind, it has been looked into
but is not available.
It would be prudent for you to all ensure you have some
insurance in case of accidents, the claim culture is
rife at the moment!
Purpose cheap through to very exspensive golf insurance
packages are available that will cover just about anything
including theft, hole in one booze up's and golf buggy
crashes.
House insurance will give you basic cover at no or very
little additional cost as long as you let them know
before you set foot on the course - worth a phone call
to check your covered!

The Society is very saddened to learn
of the sudden death of Ken Wicks!
Ken joined us in 2004, won the Challenge Cup in 2005,
the ETGS Cup in 2008 and became captain in 2009.
His funeral will take place at Holy Trinity Church,
Woodbury Salterton on Friday 2nd March at 2.00pm.
The Society will be making a donation to "The Spring
Intensive Care" in his memory.
God bless you Ken, we will sadly miss
the infectious enthusiasm and banter you brought to
our lives,
The ETGS members.

Thank you for all the cards and well wishes, greatly
appreciated although not enough to influence any leniency
on the handicaps. (You need lots of cash for that!).
The broken boney bits of the back and neck are now stuck
together again reasonably close to where they should
be and the body is getting more mobile everyday.
Short walks are manageable and although I should be
back towards the end of the season you will definitely
have a good head start for me to chase!.
Anyway here are the results from the first event, not
a lot I can say about it as wasn't there but from what
I can gather Steve and Paul have already set their stall
out to try and retain the Cup and the Spoon and will
probably both be right in the frame at the end.
Dave I heard was very complimentary about the course
in particular the fog which rolled in from Okehampton/Dartmoor
way to make him feel at home.
Can't sit here writing any longer as it hurts but if
you want anything put on the website especially any
match reports please email them to me in the normal
way - phil@swiftindustries.com

The next meeting at The Warren has been moved back one
day to Wednesday 14th April - 2.00pm
23/3/10
The first round of the 2010 season tees off next Wednesday
at Lyme Regis.
Churchill's &
Co have agreed to sponsor the event. Many thanks
again Paul for the support you have given us over the
years.
The day will start with the usual bacon bap and coffee
(or full breakfast for an extra £2) on arrival
after which last years and this years Captains will
lead us off in the first group at 1.00pm.
The golf will be followed by a two course meal and presentations,
minimum dress - smart casual.
The GAG Cup will again be to the old style Grand Prix
format with points for all positions over every event
of the season. Full details of how it will run were
given out last year so if you are not sure how is works
ask Graham Taylor who won it.
Anyone wanting to write a match report for Lyme Regis
or any of the meets to put on the web site please let
me know.
Starting this year all the minutes of all the meetings
including this years AGM can be found further down the
page on the right hand side. Hopefully this will help
convey any stuff members are supposed to know about.
An important change this year is that guests will be
charged an extra £5.00 and those that have not
paid their yearly membership fees (£20.00) before
they tee of can not have that card entered in any competition.
This should make it easier for our new Treasurer John
Dibsdall to collect the necessary funds in quickly and
still be able to enjoy his golf.
The Captain & Vice-Captain have kindly agreed to
organize the 2's competition this year as well as coordinating
the purchase of the society shirts.
Anyone wanting a shirt see Dave or Mark with the money
and they will sort it out quicker than me!
There is one 'Medium' left over in stock from last year
which I will bring along to lyme Regis.
See you all on Wednesday
Phil

With the weather conditions we have been having and

Congratulations to Mark for producing a fine performance
on what must now be one of his favorite courses.
Mark has moved to the top of the leaderboard by one
point with three matches left.
Having been in this position numerous times over the
last ten years is this going to be the one? Mark certainly
looks a more composed player than he used to be when
he was know to fall at the last hurdle but will be very
hard to beat this year with his home course still to
come.
In second place Richard Beynon is running hot and cold
partly due to injury but having won numerous championships
at club and county level will know exactly what is required
to finish the job off if his body will allow it!
In third place Steve Latham is there again just a few
points away from finally taking the cup, Steve has probably
turned out and tried harder than anyone to win it and
like Mark may just do it this year.
Some of the biggest shots I have seen and Iinclude my
Tiger Woods playstation golf game come from Steve. If
the consistency was there he would have won the Cup
several times over by now.
In 4th place sits Graham Taylor quietly stalking the
top three!
Like Richard Beynon Graham knows exactly what to do
to win and is the only one in the top four to have won
the Cup before (2002). Anyone who knows Graham will
know he can not be ignored and plays some of his best
golf when needed.
Most of us but especially Mark will not forget the 41
points at East Devon where he overtook Mark to take
the title on the last day of the season.
For the rest of us the pressure is on to produce one
or two good rounds and get into contention for East
Devon.
Best of luck I need it!

The first round of the 2009 season tees off next Tuesday
at Lyme Regis.
Churchill's &
Co have agreed to sponsor the event. Many thanks
again Paul for the support you have given us over the
years.
The day will start with the usual bacon bap and coffee
on arrival after which last years and this years Captains
will lead us off in the first group at 1.15pm.
The golf will be followed by a two course meal and presentations,
minimum dress - smart casual.
The latest handicaps are now on the site, very few changes,
unfortunately Ken you are one of them, would of helped
if you had actually turned up and bought the drinks
you promised - always open to bribes but you got to
come up with the goods first!
All joking aside Ken had a great season last year and
won quite comfortably in the end, reports coming from
his club are that he has improved again through the
close season so we will need to keep an eye on his handicap.
Although Ken will be this years Captain i doubt it will
effect his golf in any way and his competitive streak
has already materialised by being the first to be seen
practicing at Carlyon Bay ready for the summer tour.
The GAG Cup will change to a Grand Prix type format
with points for all positions over every event of the
season. Full details of how it will run will be given
out at Lyme Regis but as a taster you can see what last
years final positions would have been if it had been
run last year by clicking here GAG
CUP (Sorry Steve you missed out again)
Anyone wanting to write a match report for Lyme Regis
or any of the meets to put on the website please let
me know.
See you all on Tuesday
Phil
Message from Steve Latham about
this years fixtures;
I have endeavoured to vary some of the fixtures for
the forthcoming year.
In particular, I have brought Teignmouth forward and
reverted Okehampton to the later stages of the calendar.
Both venues have suffered low attendance in the past
and I am hoping these adjustments will help to entice
the members to both courses this year.
We have elected to give Crediton a rest this year
with Stover being the replacement.
On the last occasion we hosted Stover (3 years ago) the
heavens opened and we were reduced to playing on temporary
greens (even so, they were the best most of us had ever
played !) . Lets hope the weather is kind this year
as this is an excellent course with a tight back nine.
I would like to offer thanks to the following members
for their assistance with some of the fixtures:
Paul Marshall - Lyme Regis
Mel Braish - Fingle Glen
Jim Valentine - Honiton
Pat Lipp - Woodbury & Exe Cup
All have ensured we get excellent value for money at
these venues.
Additionally, thanks to Mark Reynolds for arranging
the weekend away at Carlyon Bay. This promises
to be yet another excellent tour.
Here's wishing for some great golfing weather.

Leader Board (Only shows players who have played

12/11/08 Message from our Captain
East Devon Thursday 19th October, first tee time is
11.30am. Ken Wicks holds a very slender lead at the
top of the leader board for the end of season ETGS cup
and from previous years we know that anything can happen
on the last day. There are at least 6 players in
with a great chance of winning the cup and a 40+ score
could do the trick on the day. The end of season meal
and presentations will take place at the Beachcomber
in Exmouth---please be there by 7pm for a 7.30pm start.
A big thank you to Hank who has arranged a buffet style
meal with curry, lasagne etc for a cost of £7.50
per head and wine can be purchased over the bar
at £7.50 a bottle. For those unlucky enough to
have a "wooden spoon" score during the season
and this includes the captain and the chairman, full
list on website, remember you will need to buy a bottle
before the meal to put on the table. Have a great day,
and look forward to seeing you all at Budleigh on Thursday.

A few details for Highbullen 2008
Can everyone ensure that they arrive at RND no later
than 11.30am as the first tee is booked for 12. If anyone
wants any food before they go out, they will have to
make their own arrangements and give themselves plenty
of time. As Steve Latham only flies back into
the UK in the early hours of Friday morning,
Roy has agreed that he can go out in a later group---nothing
changes!!!!.
After R&D we will travel back to Highbullen and
check in for the rest of the weekend. There should be
enough time before dinner to hit the gym (Ned, Rob &
Si) but i will be conserving my energy, sinking some

Roy hit a superb 43 and had his hands on the cup with
only one group left on the course.
However, Matt Latham had other ideas and set about paring
the course and scoring 41 points of a handicap of 5

7/7/07
With seven events to play and seven to go the leader
board is taking shape with Roy Mitchell starting to
establish a lead. Roy's consistent golf has pushed Ken
Wickes and Peter Bonetta into 2nd & 3rd place respectable
but both Ken & Peter have low scores to knock out.
Mark Reynolds should be a contender at the end though
missing too many events has previously cost him the
championship.
Another good bet playing only 4 events so far this year
is previous 2002 Club Champion Graham Taylor, if previous
form is anything to go by look out for him moving up
the board during the run in.
Next event - Okehampton, Wednesday 11th July.

Very enjoyable course if the weather holds with excellent
food and service at the 19th hole.
6/7/07
After a two day battle against the elements the Bandits
managed to defeat the Bogies by one point and retained
the trophy for another year.
Tactics for this year seemed to come more from the Bogies
who after being 1/2 point down on the Friday tried to
get the Bandits Hammered. My partner Ken Wicks and I
were in particular singled out by their Captain for
extreme provocation from Martin Jewell and Nick Paris,
having to force lager down the throat in under 7 seconds
and having Guinness spiked with unnecessary amounts
of Port is totally out of order Graham! Didn't work
though cu's we won and looking forward to the battle
continuing off the course again next year!
Last to bed award went to New boy Roger Shorland, Steve
Latham, Graham Clarkson and Dave Lawson.
Sundays Challenge Cup went to a much improved Martin
Jewell who seemed to handle the weather better than
most, probably because he lives in the harsh elements
of Okehampton
Previous 2001 Club Champion Paul Kelly lost out on the
back nine after a excellent 1st nine holes.
3rd place went to Wayne Taylor who still holds the record
for the winning the Challenge Cup the most times.

GAG Group & Cooksleys

TEAMS FOR BOWOOD
25/6/07
Our next and 7th event of the season is to be held at
Bowood Park in deepest Cornwall.
The course is well known as being "similar to Valderrama
or Sotogrande" but with a less posh and more relaxed
atmosphere that can extend well into the early hours.
Those that have been before will now what to expect,
those that have not will not be disappointed but look
out for the renowned card school where a lot of money
has been won and lost on the turn of a card. (Ask Graham)
The team events Tee-off at 1.06pm although our Captains
Graham for the Fockers & Mel for the Bandits would
like you there at least an hour before to sort out tactics
for the day.
TEAMS WILL BE ANNOUNCED ON TUESDAY 25/6/07

Lyme Regis
With 21 Pars and 3 Birdies between them, on a course
they had never seen before, Richard (hcp 9) and Matt
(5) lead the field to take 1st and second place respectively.
Mark Reynolds (21) opened his account with a fine 35
to take 3rd place after a count back with Matt.
The rest of us mortals still rusty from the long break
since East Devon scrambled around with good holes and
blobs scattered throughout the cards.
The wooden spoon went to Phil (15) with 17 points. Still
recovering from a dislocated shoulder our champion of
last year gave the excuse that being out driven on every
hole by Paul Marshall (26) totally threw his game.
It only became apparent over dinner that Paul is currently
being prescribed performance enhancing steroids!!.
This position of Chairman obviously has its its benifits,
though steroids is probably pushing it to the limit.
To even things up Paul can we all have them at the next
event?.
Overall though a great day with no fog on a good course
and excellent food in the restaurant, our thanks to
Paul and Churchill's Accountants for organising the
event for the 2nd year running.
Sponsors Prizes;
N. Pin, - Gary Shrimpton (28)
N. Pin in 2, - Richard Beynon (9)
L. Drive, - Ken Wicks (24)
Ken Wicks has kindly offered to organise the NP, NP
in 2 and Longest Drive markers at each event, many thanks
again Ken.
Handicaps will be agreed and adjusted next week in time
for The Warren.
26/3/07
The 1st event at Lyme Regis is sponsored by our Chairman
Paul Marshall who assures me that our group will not
be attacked from three sides again by players lost in
the fog firing balls down what they thought was their
fairway! With Pat Lipp firing his 3 wood up his fairway,
Ken Wicks coming from behind and visibility 20 yards
I am not sure if he can keep his word so I will get
Steve Latham to check my life policies.
Our Captain Peter Bonetta (please read his comments
on the ETGS page) will
no doubt put his stamp on the season and certainly be
one of the leaders fighting for top spot.
If you have any small problems or suggestions Peter
is your ideal 1st port of call so he can bring it to
the committee.
If there are any major problems or disasters Peter is
your only port of call (That includes any hassle when
were on tour). Many of the members have told me they
missed the comments posted on the web site for each
event, this worked very well during the 2005 season
when I would do the prologue and Ned would do the epilogue.
If anyone wishes to take on the roll this year please
let me know even if it is only for a few events. (John,
if you want to get away from changing the nappies and
with your highly regarded sports reporting background
you would be the ideal candidate).
Another role that needs filling is the sorting out of
the NP, NP in 2 and L Drive markers, this will be made
easier this year with our own markers brought to each
event. Whoever decides he can help out will just have
to bring them along and take them home each time we
play. Please let us know ASAP if you can do this and
for what events.Anyway with only 2 days to go i'm off
to find my clubs for some practice, see you all at Lyme
Regis.
